# What is a template?

Understand how Templates turn repeatable presentations into reusable Decky workflows.

A Template turns an existing successful presentation into a repeatable presentation structure.

Start with a presentation that already has a useful structure. Decky analyzes it so you can decide what remains fixed, what Decky can customize, what information users provide, and which instructions Decky follows.

A Theme controls how a presentation looks and sounds. A Template controls the repeatable structure and content rules of a presentation.

Templates work well when the slide structure already works but the content changes each time. Common examples include:

* QBRs, proposals, and business reviews
* Discovery decks and account plans
* Recurring internal presentations

### What changes each time?

Depending on its configuration, Decky can:

* Fill designated content and use requester answers
* Use requested files and follow Template instructions
* Generate dynamic content where the Template allows it

Other elements remain preserved from the source presentation.

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation dynamically by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the current page URL with the `ask` query parameter, and the optional `goal` query parameter:

```
GET https://decky.gitbook.io/decky-docs/templates/what-is-a-template.md?ask=<question>&goal=<endgoal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is optional and describes the broader end goal you are ultimately trying to accomplish on behalf of the user. GitBook uses it to tailor the answer towards what is most useful for that goal.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
